I think it is the first of its kind in the world, pure latex from rubber trees, all made by hand.

I was telling Jose, the day after new years, while driving down to Santiago from Monte Grande, about my plans to return to Amazonia to make sculpture from natural latex from seringas (rubber trees). I said I was having trouble getting back there as the first time left me very sick for a long time with a parasite. But also that I was unable to imagine or draw what I was planning to make. For months I have on my list, ‘drawings for rubber sculpture’ and yet I could not see a thing.

It was then that it occurred to me that I could make a yoga mat. I had been looking for yoga mats in Brasil for Christmas gifts for friends and could not find them. In Chile I did a little more research. When I did find them in Santiago they were more than thirty US dollars, and yet the money there is worth more than three times less than ours. It would be like someone from the US paying more than a hundred dollars for a piece of rubber that wears out in two years.

Porque cuando Amazonia tem bastante latex por tudo o mundo quien fazen yoga?

Why, when Amazonia has enough rubber for the entire world to do yoga? No one has been exporting rubber from Amazonia since the forties. Even then the market had long since collapsed. Someone from England stole the seeds from the seringa trees in the early part of the 20th century and since then cultivation of rubber has been cheaper and more efficient in Malaysia.

I started thinking that my sculpture was turning conceptual. The art in this particular case, is not the object, the mat itself. The ART is the connection of the skills and natural resources of the people in the jungle to the growing number of yogis in South America and their need for a lifetime of affordable yoga mats. They are importing synthetic mats from Germany and the US now.

So here we are with this very visual idea of mats for South Americans from South American resources, made by South Americans. You can imagine the flow chart overlaid on the map with the resources moving down to the cities and the money flowing up to the jungle.

This is very aligned with the concept of yoga, the actual word meaning union. Although I love art, I have to say when push came to shove, yoga won. With yoga, but not art, I was able to rescue myself from a dangerously long and profound depression. I truly believe that if yoga replaced antidepressants in the world, we would see a significant shift. Yoga is about helping yourself, not waiting for or paying for someone else to help you and then forever feeling dependent on them.

Phillip Guston said that the role of the artist in the world is to prove that it is truly possible to create something with one head, one heart and two hands. That this is still possible in a world where most people work all day, come home, get drunk, collapse, get up and start all over again, is monumental. For me this project is not a business venture, but public art. I would like to see it propelled by individuals only, no corporations, no governments. (Menos, por favor!) I would love to be able to get enough assistance and money from yogis that I know and people that they know to do something truly significant.

The people in Jamaraqua are very excited about the idea. When I stayed with them last March I knew that I wanted to return. Their faces are so peaceful and their lives are so simple. No electricity, no running water, no nada. They take the bus three hours to Santarém to buy food twice a month. The bus leaves at three in the morning!

We ate fish, fresh caught, toasted on the end of sticks under the full moon. I assured them that yoga people are gente boa and I can assure you all that they are gente boa tembém. We made seven prototypes in all, each time learning more about how to make it sticky enough, but not too sticky. I plan to return next month when the rubber starts flowing and try natural colors and even natural scents in the milk.

Altar da Selva is the name of the mat. It literally means altar of the jungle (selva being jungle and selvagem meaning wild).

I imagine that some day soon there will be a school in Jamaraqua and more than fifty children will not have to travel three hours and live in another village in order to attend school.

Yogis y amigos,

Les estoy adjuntando algunas fotos del primer mat de yoga totalmente natural confeccionado la ultima semana en el Amazona. Pienso que es el primero en su tipo en el mundo, puro latex de arboles de caucho y hecho a mano.

Al regresar a Santiago desde Monte Grande, el dÌa después de año nuevo, le estaba diciendo a José, acerca de mis planes de regresar al Amazona para hacer esculturas de latex natural de seringas (árboles de caucho). Le decía que tenía problemas de regresar alla pues la primera vez que fui estuve mucho tiempo enferma por una bacteria. Pero además,el hecho de que era incapaz de imaginar o dibujar lo que estaba planeando hacer. Por meses solo tenía en mi lista ìdibujos para esculturas en cauchoî y an no podía visualizar algo.

Fué entonces que se me ocurrio que podia hacer un mat de yoga. Estuve buscando mat de yoga en Brasil para regalar en Navidad a mis amigos, pero no los pude encontrar. En Chile también busqué y cuando los encontré en Santiago valian mas de 30 dolares y sin embargo, ahi el dinero vale menos de tres veces que nosotros. Seria como que alguien de Estados Unidos pagara 100 dolares por una pieza de goma que no dura más de dos años.

Por qué, cuando en el Amazona hay caucho para hacer mats de yoga para todo el mundo?

Desde los años 40 nadie ha importado caucho desde el Amazona. El mercado está colapsado hace tiempo. Alguien de Inglaterra roba las semillas de estos arboles al empezar el siglo 20 y desde entonces el cultivo del caucho ha sido más barato y eficiente en Malasia.

Comencé a pensar que mi escultura se estaba haciendo algo conceptual. El arte en este caso particular no es un objetivo, el mat sí. El ARTE es la conexion entre destreza y los recursos naturales de las personas en la selva con el creciente número de yoghis en sud américa y su necesidad de comprar mats de yoga a precios convenientes. Ahora estan importando mats sintéticos desde Alemania y Estados Unidos.

Por eso es mi idea de hacer mats para Sudamericanos con los recursos de Sudamérica y hechos por Sudamericanos. Te imaginas como cubrirímos el globo enviando estos recursos a las ciudades y recibiendo de vuelta el dinero en la selva.

Esta es la idea de yoga, cuya palabra significa union. Aunque yo amo el arte puedo decir que el yoga gana. Fue con el yoga y no con el arte que yo pude superar una peligrosa y prolongada depresion. Estoy convencida de que si en el mundo, el yoga reemplazara a los antidepresivos veriamos un cambio significativo. El yoga te ayuda a ti, no espera que alguien, o que pagues por algo más para que te ayude y que tengas que depender para siempre de ello.

Philip Guston dijo que el rol del artista en el mundo es probar que realmente es posible crear algo con una cabeza, un corazon y dos manos. Que esto sea a un posible en un mundo donde la mayoría de las personas trabajan todo el dia, regresan su casa, se emborrachan, colapsan, se levantan y empiezan de nuevo, es monumental.
Para mi este proyecto no es un negocio aventurero, si no arte publico. Me gustaría que fuera organizado por individuos solamente, no por corporaciones ni menos por gobiernos. Me gustaría conseguir ayuda y dinero de los yoghis que yo conozco y de gente que quiera hacer algo significativo.

La gente en Jamaraqua están muy entusiasmados con la idea. Cuando estuve ahí en Marzo pasado, yo sabía que ellos querían que regresara. Sus caras son tan pacíficas y sus vidas tan simples. No hay electricidad, ni agua corriente, nada. Ellos toman un bus por tres horas a Santarém a comprar su alimento, dos veces al mes. El bus parte a las tres de la mañana!!

Comemos pescado, recién capturado, tostados en un palo bajo la luna llena. Yo les aseguro a ellos que la gente de yoga son gente "boa" y les aseguro que ellos son gente "boa" también. Hemos hecho siete prototipos en todo, cada vez conociendo más de cómo hacerlo más denso, pero no demasiado. Planeo retornar el próximo mes cuando el caucho comience a fluir y tratar colores naturales y eventualmente esencias naturales en la leche.

Me imagino que pronto algún día habrá una escuela en Jamaraqua y más de 50 niños no tendrán que viajar tres horas y vivir en otro pueblo para asistir a clases.

También me imagino,que algún día habrá una escuela de yoga y meditación en Jamaraqua con un piso de latex natural! Tuve dos clases de yoga y cada día que practicaba he tenido una curiosa audiencia. Cuando me vine el Lunes, la madre estaba fumando con una pipa de goma y la nuera estaba cociendo la tela para una bolsa de goma de su propio diseño en la mesa de cocina. Mats de yoga de diferentes formas estaban secándose bajo el sol en el patio alrededor de la casa.

Perdonen por lo largo que esta resultando esto, pero me siento tan satisfecha de escribir en inglés, ya que todo el proyecto lo estoy desarrollando en portugus y mi cabeza duele!
